So how did foam parties come to be? Strap in, because this tale has all the splash and sparkle you’d expect.

Legend has it, the very first foam party happened when a fire-breathing dragon sneezed into a bubbling waterfall. (Okay, that dragon may have been me, and the sneeze may have been due to glitter allergies.)

But in the human world? Foam parties don’t go that far back—but their rise was legendary nonetheless.

💃 Ibiza, 1990s: The Sudsy Start

Let’s travel to the electric nights of Ibiza, Spain, in the early 1990s. Wild nightclubs like Amnesia were always pushing boundaries—and someone had a foamy idea:“What if we filled the dance floor with bubbles?”

Thus, the first commercial foam parties were born. Clubbers were instantly hooked. Dancing in piles of suds while lights pulsed and music blared? Unforgettable.

From Ibiza, foam parties bubbled their way across Europe like a tidal wave of fun.

While Ibiza gets the credit for kicking off the modern foam craze, some film historians point to a fascinating moment in early cinema: a 1932 musical short called Rhapsody in Black and Blue. In one scene, performers dance in a room filled with bubbles—long before foam parties were even a thing.

It wasn’t a party as we know them today, but it might just be the first filmed moment of people having a blast in a sudsy setting. My take? “Foam has always been fabulous—even in black and white.”
